Song of the Day, December 11: Didn’t I by Gerry Rafferty

Today’s song is from Gerry Rafferty’s wonderful transition album, Can I Have My Money Back? After leaving folky duo the Humblebums, Rafferty put together this solo debut. It’s a great set of pop songs, inspired by Rubber Soul era Beatles but distinctively his own vision. He collaborated on some tracks with old friend Joe Egan, and the pair would follow the disc with a short stint as part of the band Stealers Wheel.

Didn’t I? is one of the standout tracks. Deceptively simple folk pop, it’s a rebuttal to a romantic partner who is dissatisfied with the singer’s best efforts. With sincerity and determination, the narrator stands his ground, demanding to be taken seriously and appreciated.

  Agreed. He gets pegged as the “Baker Street” guy. It’s a great song, but his catalog has so much more to offer!
