Song of the Day, January 23: These Boots Are Made For Walkin’ by Nancy Sinatra

Today’s song is These Boots Are Made For Walkin’ by Nancy Sinatra. Emerging from her early film and television career, the singer determined to be more than just another celebrity offspring. This was her first big hit, written by frequent collaborator Lee Hazlewood. It burst onto the airwaves with Sinatra’s strong vocals, a great pop hook, and a fiery determination. On one level a simply great kiss-off song, it also served as something of a proto-feminist anthem. While she enjoyed another dozen hits (including a #1 duet with her father), this first big single [#1 in early 1966] is permanently etched as her signature. And that’s not a bad thing at all.
These boots are made for walking, and that’s just what they’ll do
One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you
Enjoy this spunky rejection today.
