This week sees medley madness in full swing. Launched by the unexpected success of Stars On 45’s Medley… in June of 1981, a number of other artists released medley singles over the next year. They ranged from oldies rehashes to disco-style mashups of music from other genres. In all, seven medley singles reached the Top 40 during this one-year span. While other medleys (often song pairs like The Spinners favored) have hit the charts, this was by far the richest — and perhaps oddest — collection of the genre.

Three of them shared the Hot 100 this week, with Meco at #39, the Beatles at #50, and Stars On 45 at #71.

Here’s a list of all the medley hits:

  • Medley, Stars On 45, #1 June 1981
  • Hooked On Classics, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, #10 January 1982
  • The Beach Boys Medley, The Beach Boys, #12 October 1981
  • The Beatles Movie Medley, The Beatles, #12 May 1982
  • Stars On 45 III: A Tribute to Stevie Wonder, Stars On 45 #28, May 1982
  • Hooked On Swing, Larry Elgart, #31 July 1982
  • Pop Goes the Movies, Meco, #35 April 1982

Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight uses statistical analysis — hard numbers — to tell compelling stories about politics, sports, science, economics and culture.
