Song of the Day, January 23: On A Monday Morning by Rachel Unthank and the Winterset

unthankcruelToday’s song is a fresh take on an obscure folk gem. Cyril Tawney was a fixture of British folk, a noted collector and historian and a skilled singer-songwriter. He was best known for his songs of the sea and naval life. Tawney collaborated on the 1966 album A Cold Wind Blows, for which he wrote On A Monday Morning.

It’s a quiet, wistful song, capturing the challenges of working life. The protagonist drank away his weekend, trying to forget his humdrum life, only to find himself forced back into it on a cold, grey Monday. It’s a delightful sketch, with smart observations and careful phrasing.

Rachel Unthank selected the song to open her debut album with the Winterset, Cruel Sister. It sets the tone of the album perfectly, and Rachel’s uncanny harmonies with sister Becky create a haunting start to the disc and the workweek.

Enjoy this wonderful song today.
