Song of the Day, July 4: Love Song by the Damned

DamnedLoveSongToday’s song kicks off a punk reunion in fine style. After two albums and an acrimonious split, the Damned reformed without founding guitarist Brian James. The revised lineup found new energy, exploring a quirky, dark side of pop that they fused to their strong punk roots. The result was the delightful Machine Gun Etiquette, and the opening track shows off all their skills in one great little package.

Love Song is a thrashy bit of off-kilter romance. Clocking in at just 2:21, it’s a smart, boisterous romp, celebrating infatuation so strong it’s almost absurd. Dave Vanian tosses out lines like “I’ll be the rubbish, you be the bin!” with such deadpan sincerity that they’re charming. The chorus’ assurance that the love song is “just for you” is disarmingly sweet as the band thrash through the music with abandon.

Enjoy this wonderful song today.
