Song of the Day, June 28: Fire and Ice by Pat Benatar

BenatarFireIceToday’s song was Pat Benatar’s third straight Top 20 hit. While assembling the material for Precious Time, her magnificent, chart-topping album, Benatar wrote a handful of the songs herself. She composed Fire and Ice with guitarist Scott Sheets and songwriter Tom Kelly. It was the first of Kelly’s hits; he would go on to pen a dozen more Top 20 singles, often with writing partner Billy Steinberg, five of which went all the way to #1.

Fire and Ice is classic Benatar, a slow burning rocker that picks up energy as it plays. A song of romantic confusion and mistreatment, it makes the most of her powerful voice. The band are in fine form, driving the tune along with barely restrained power.

Enjoy this classic hit today.
