Song of the Day, June 10: We Must Believe In Magic by Crystal Gayle

GayleMagicToday’s song is an unlikely mixture that works. Crystal Gayle’s finest, most successful album, We Must Believe In Magic, was produced by her regular musical partner Allen Reynolds. He also wrote or co-wrote a couple of the songs, including the title track, which closes the album.

We Must Believe In Magic is a haunting, deceptively simple song, with two brief verses, a wordless bridge, and a chorus repeated for a long fade. The lyrics merge the mystical with science fiction, an odd combination, especially for a country star. Gayle’s straightforward, delightful delivery makes it work, creating a quiet anthem of hope and determination.

Enjoy this surprising delight today.

BONUS! I first heard this song when Crystal Gayle appeared on the Muppet Show. The episode from October 1979 also featured Gonzo the Great as Dearth Nadir in a Pigs In Space Segment! Enjoy this evocative performance that closed the show.
