Song of the Day, June 1: Ex-Girlfriend by American Music Club

AMCEitzelExGToday’s song is a bit of awkward support. American Music Club’s Everclear is an amazing set of tracks exploring the darker side of life and love. Ex-Girlfriend is the most straightforward rocker of the set, a driving tune with an urgent vocal. Mark Eitzel’s trademark croon gains emphasis from the energy of the track as he chats with an old friend.

Your ex-girlfriend told me you spent all yesterday crying
Hey, I didn’t know things were going so bad for you
Maybe you’re just trying to get her to come back to you
Or work your way out of the cynical attitudes that protect you

The narrator tries to be sympathetic, but his own pessimism gets in the way. The result is a wonderful, touching, and very real lyric, delivered with confidence and broken grace.

Enjoy this great song today.
