Song of the Day, May 9: Sweetheart by Died Pretty

DiedPrettySweetheartToday’s song is a dark meditation from a band at the peak of their powers. Died Pretty slowly evolved from a loud, pub-oriented band to a refined alt-rock outfit with polished grit. Singer Ron Peno and guitarist Brett Myers made a strong pair, and the addition of keyboard player John Hoey proved to be the secret weapon that anchored their sound. Doughboy Hollow is a grand set of anguished rock that borrows from many places but sounds only like itself.

One of the standouts is the mysterious Sweetheart. It starts out stately, and builds with subtle menace, with Peno’s near whisper becoming an urgent cry for each chorus. It could be the tale of a broken relationship, but there’s something more sinister under the surface. Peno has revealed in interviews that he was inspired by the story of a serial killer, a theme that adds rich dimension to the track.

Enjoy this dark song today.
