Song of the Day, April 12: No Imagination by Blondie

BlondiePlasticNoImagToday’s song finds a pioneering band nailing down one of their consistent themes. After a promising debut and a long break for touring, Blondie released Plastic Letters, a mixed bag with some strong moments. One of the finest is No Imagination, written by keyboard player Jimmy Destri. It’s a tale of a one-night stand, filled with clever wordplay and sharp observations.

Singer Debbie Harry makes the most of the song, tossing off the lyrics with just the right mix of detachment and lust. Making it clear that she has no illusions about what this pretty kid has to offer, she details the whole scene flawlessly. “Got no imagination to clutter up my head,” she intones, offering a clear dismissal of any illusions for future plans. With an edgy but restrained band behind her, Harry demonstrates her knack for vocal persona, something that would blossom on future releases.

Enjoy this fun song today.
