Song of the Day, April 4: To Speak Is A Sin by Pet Shop Boys

PSBVerySpeakToday’s song is an ode to club life from dance music masters. By the time of their brilliant fifth album, Very, Pet Shop Boys were fixtures in the dance clubs. Their well-crafted songs were danceable and smart, with varied, compelling grooves and wry, observational lyrics. They knew their audience, and crafted many songs about the action in the clubs. To Speak Is A Sin is one of the finest.

Lush and sinuous, it’s all about the unspoken rules of hooking up. The Boys capture all the painful nuance that goes into flirting games, hinting at the rewards of success and the perils of a misstep, even when unintended. The vocal is tender and tough at once, a tribute to the skills the duo developed.

Enjoy this wonderful song today.
