Song of the Day, March 18: Dark Parts by Perfume Genius

Perfume-Genius-Dark-PartsToday’s song is a stirring tribute to the strength of the human spirit. Mike Hadreas started his musical career — under the name Perfume Genius — as a way to work through his personal demons. His brilliant second album, Put Your Back N 2 It, expands the approach, including narratives from his family. Hadreas’ mother was the victim of abuse as a child, and he unpacks that experience with chilling clarity. With a confident vocal over an urgent piano figure, he assures her that her spirit is strong enough to survive. The last third of the song is a clever departure, as the tempo slows and he pledges his support, knowing that two hearts are stronger than one.

As with many of his songs, Hadreas created a simple, jarring video, this time co-starring his mother to great effect. Enjoy this wonderful song today.
