Song of the Day, March 8: The Unguarded Moment by the Church

Church - Unguarded MomentToday’s song announced the Church as a band to watch. The Unguarded Moment was written by bassist / vocalist Steve Kilbey with Michelle Parker. Included on the band’s debut, Of Skins and Heart, it was chosen as their second single. The debut album is solid new wave pop, well played but hardly as interesting as the course the Church would chart in the coming years.

This song, however, hints at the musical and lyrical complexity lurking just around the corner. With smart metaphors — like “men with horses for hearts” — and a dense, compelling musical setting, it stands out from the synth-pop pack of the day. Twin guitar threat Marty Willson-Piper and Peter Koppes show off the complex soundscapes they were learning to build, and the crisp production gives every sound its best advantage. The Church would go on to greater things — Kilbey has famously disowned this song — but this is a wonderful early moment.

Enjoy this great song today.
