Song of the Day, March 1: Watch the Sunrise by Big Star

BigStarWatchToday’s song is a quiet moment at the birth of power pop. When Alex Chilton and Chris Bell formed Big Star, they intended to have a Lennon-McCartney style collaboration. Each brought in a couple of older songs for the first album — the seminal #1 Record — but writing credits were shared. One true collaboration was Watch the Sunrise. Driven by a shimmering acoustic guitar, it features one of Chilton’s brightest vocals, sweetened by Bell’s harmonies. Hopefully hesitant, it has an almost country feel. The result is a perfect package, with music, lyric, and vocals coming together to shine the early morning light across the airwaves.

Enjoy this beautiful song today.
