Song of the Day, January 15: We Will Not Be Lovers by the Waterboys

WaterboysNotLoversToday’s song is a perfect blend of folk fiddling and anthemic rock. When Karl Wallinger left the Waterboys, band leader, singer, and principle songwriter Mike Scott reinvented the group. He kept the sonic energy, but brought in a group of talented folk musicians. The resulting blend was pure magic, and Fisherman’s Blues is a wonderful set of songs, a mix of originals, covers, and traditional tracks delivered in acoustic and electric settings.

We Will Not Be Lovers channels the searing energy of previous Waterboys work. Scott’s vocal delivery is powerful as he tells a tempting but dangerous woman that they are NEVER going to happen. Fiddler Steve Wickham turns in a flawless counterpoint to Scott’s guitar, and longtime Waterboy Anthony Thistlethwaite adds a tasty bit of mandolin. The result is packed with emotional charge and musical intensity.

Enjoy this great song today.
