Song of the Day, December 8: The Celtic Soul Brothers by Dexys Midnight Runners

DexysCSBToday’s song is the joyous mission statement to Dexy’s Midnight Runners second incarnation. Vocalist and bandleader Kevin Rowland never liked to be pinned down. With eclectic tastes and strong ambition, he built a blue-eyed soul unit, then began transforming it. Merging the remnants of the band with a group of fiddlers and a set of new musicians, he kept some of the soul roots but added a strong folk-pop element. The result was unique and delightful, resulting in the brilliant Too-Rye-Ay.

The Celtic Soul Brothers is a perfect introduction to the new sound, driven by joyous fiddles and exuberant harmonies. Rowland is in fine voice, serving as the host to the proceedings and offering an irresistible welcome.

Enjoy this delightful song today.
