Song of the Day, November 6: Love Is Like A Rock by Donnie Iris and the Cruisers

IrisRockToday’s song is a classic of 80’s rock radio. After nearly topping the charts as the leader of the Jaggerz in 1970 (The Rapper, #2 the week ending March 21), Donnie Iris cast about for a decade, eventually forming a musical partnership with fellow Pennsylvanian Mark Avsec. The pair co-wrote Iris’ first solo album, which featured a crack band that became his regular backing unit. For his second album — the delightful King Cool — Iris gave the Cruisers full label credit.

The whole band also received writing credit on their most famous song, Love Is Like A Rock [#37 Pop, #9 Rock, 1982]. It’s a smart, fun track that takes long-time rock tropes and gives them new energy. Iris chants a series of things that are bound to disappoint over a crunchy rock backing. With a shout of “HEY!”, he makes it clear that love will never fail (and rock comes in a close second). Avsec’s production is flawless, blending a crisp New Wave energy with a classic rock sound. And that guitar solo…Mary Lee delivers!

Enjoy this delightful track today.
