Song of the Day, October 26: You Won’t B Here by Perfume Genius

CD_2PG_BK_BW_70020005.qxdToday’s song is a standout from the first Perfume Genius album, Learning. It’s an apt title, with Mike Hadreas — the man behind the name — figuring out his distinctive approach to music. A blend of edgy folk-pop and spare electronic soundscapes, it’s a powerful start to a promising career.

You Won’t B Here is particularly moving, a look at someone who has done irreparable damage to his relationships. Hadreas’ vocal is reminiscent of the best of Neil Young, both fragile and strong. He’s brutally honest with his subject, but somehow presents it with compassion. It’s a tough balance, carried off flawlessly, setting the stage for the quantum leap Perfume Genius would take on the second album.

Enjoy this difficult song today.
