Song of the Day, September 16: When I Write the Book by Rockpile

RockpileSecondsBookToday’s song is a late track from a band that sort of wasn’t. When Nick Lowe left Brinsley Schwartz, he started singing and playing bass in a group that also featured guitarist and vocalist Dave Edmunds. With second guitarist Billy Bremner and drummer Terry Williams, they became Rockpile. By that point, however, Lowe had also launched a solo career and begun a noted sideline as a post-punk producer. With two lead vocalists each signed to different labels, their work as Rockpile seldom came out under the band’s name. Two Edmunds discs and one Lowe album were all effectively Rockpile work, as were two side projects.

Toward the end of the collaboration, the quartet finally released their own album, the charming Seconds of Pleasure. The highlight of the disc is When I Write the Book, one of Lowe’s contributions. It’s a classic story-of-our-romance song, with elements of pub rock and rockabilly surging through the jaunty tune. Lowe is in fine voice, and the band — a well-honed machine by now — provide a perfect soundtrack to the story. Ironically, after finally being the band they’d almost been for years, the quartet disbanded, although they still show up on each others’ projects now and then.

Enjoy this delightful song today.
