Song of the Day, September 2: Try Again by Big Star

BigStarTryToday’s song is Try Again from Big Star’s power pop masterpiece #1 Record. The band and album drew strength from the collaboration — and tension — between Alex Chilton and Chris Bell. The pair wanted to emulate the partnership of Lennon and McCartney, succeeding in perhaps more ways than they intended. While they crafted many of the songs together, each brought in a handful of songs from before the band formed.

Try Again is one of Bell’s contributions, a sweet, wistful ballad of determination. The sound is reminiscent of the modern country rock sound pioneered by Gram Parsons, with aching guitar and vocals stretched almost to breaking. Big Star make the sound their own, adding echo and depth, crafting a power country style that suits the lyrics perfectly.

Enjoy this charming song today.
