Song of the Day, August 11: What A Good Boy by Barenaked Ladies

BNLGordonGoodBoyToday’s song is What A Good Boy by Barenaked Ladies, the Canadian band best known for their wacky #1 smash One Week. While humor and wordplay are key components to their sound, BNL have always included songs with insight and emotion on their albums as well. One of the most consistent themes in their music is a sense of nostalgia, by turns wistful, funny, and satisfied.

Their debut album, Gordon, features a musical embarrassment of riches. The band were already a tight unit, polished without being slick, underscoring the smart lyrics and passionate singing. Songwriters Steven Page and Ed Robertson complemented each other nicely, providing different perspectives on the common themes. The highlight of the disc is Page’s What A Good Boy. It’s a pensive song about expectations and aging, sung with quiet grace.

Enjoy this wonderful song today.
