Song of the Day, August 10: Let Love Speak Up Itself by the Beautiful South

BSouthLetLoveToday’s song is Let Love Speak Up Itself by the Beautiful South. It’s a highlight of their wonderful second album, Choke. Vocalist Paul Heaton steps to the fore, providing a perfectly wistful delivery. The song is a disarmingly honest look at the challenges of romance. Heaton encourages couples to celebrate love for its own sake, avoiding the traps of outside forces and unreasonable expectations. The other singers add the patented Beautiful South harmonies, while the band build a slow, embracing musical framework. The result is a compelling, hopeful song, quite different from much of the band’s ironic looks at life. Somehow, it fits perfectly.

Enjoy this lovely song today.
