Song of the Day, June 22: I Dreamed Last Night by Justin Hayward and John Lodge

BlueJaysDreamedToday’s song is the lovely result of a band on a break. After the tense and challenging work that went in to recording Seventh Sojourn, the Moody Blues opted for a hiatus that wound up lasting four years. During that time singer and guitarist Justin Hayward began exploring other projects. After attempts to work with keyboard player Mike Pinder fell apart, Hayward got together with bassist John Lodge and longtime Moodies producer Tony Clarke. They recorded a duo album with the punny title Blue Jays (two of the Moody Blues, both with first initial “J”).

The standout track, which holds up well against the whole of the band’s output is the sad ballad I Dreamed Last Night. Lush but not overdramatic, literate without pretension, it’s a magnificent example of the kind of emotive pop that Hayward crafted at his best. His voice is in fine form, capturing the tension and ache nicely without ever quite going over the edge into melodrama. It’s a careful balancing act — one that the group doesn’t always achieve — and the result is sweeping and sorrowful.

Enjoy this great song today.
