Song of the Day, June 12: Only A Fool by Skydiggers

SkydiggersToday’s song is Only A Fool. Skydiggers are a sadly under-appreciated roots rock outfit from Canada, centered on the talents of Andy Maize and Josh Finlayson. Respected by their peers but unable to land the audience they deserve, the band have moved from label to label, touring regularly. Their fifth disc, Desmond’s Hip City, is their finest, a set of edgy folk tracks that explores the darker side of the human condition.

On Only A Fool, they ponder the kind of person who would risk the pain and potential heartbreak of loyalty. “Only a fool would be such a friend,” they posit, as the band grinds out a darkly catchy backdrop. As the song begins to fade, the last line both redeems it and underscores the pain: “Only a fool like me.”

Skydiggers have mostly faded away, the members collaborating with other Canadian luminaries like Stephen Fearing and working on other projects. Enjoy this reminder of their amazing musical power today.
