Song of the Day, May 8: I Say Nothing by Voice of the Beehive

VoBSayNothingToday’s song is I Say Nothing from Voice of the Beehive’s wonderful debut album Let It Bee. Harmonious American ex-pat singers Tracey and Melissa Belland put together a crack band — featuring former members of Madness — and created a joyous, clever set of songs about the complexities of all sorts of relationships.

I Say Nothing is a stern rebuke of gossip and a warning of its power to harm. Told in very different vignettes, it demonstrates the various motivators for silence and the need to understand and support rather than pry and hint. The fairly heavy theme is made buoyant by the gorgeous pop setting, giving the medicine a spoonful of sugar without making it too sweet. As with the bulk of the album, Voice of the Beehive manage to walk a lyrical/musical tightrope with skill and precision, making us dance and think and leaving us humming as we get on with our day.

Enjoy this delightful song today.
