Song of the Day, April 20: Blush by the Hummingbirds

HummingbirdsBlushToday’s song is the Hummingbirds’ Blush, the opening track and lead single from their debut album, loveBUZZ. After a handful of promising indie singles, the quartet signed with fledgling Australian label rooArt. With sympathetic support from their new home and superstar producer Mitch Easter, they crafted a set of power pop gems that blend beauty and danger over a surging musical backdrop.

Blush is a perfect sample of the album and a highlight of Aussie alt-pop. The tight three-part harmonies of the singers blend with the delightful jangle-pop of the guitars, while the rhythm section propels things along. A song of romantic frustration, the edgy energy is just right. The lyrics capture the tension, with the singers urging “talk to me” and “leave me alone” with equal fervor, and the surprising wind-down is pitch perfect. Tightly constructed and just raw enough, the Hummingbirds flew onto the scene with a brilliance seldom matched.

Enjoy this amazing pop gem today in a live-for-TV version that shows off the band’s chops.
