Song of the Day, April 6: My Third Love by Krystle Warren and the Faculty

WarrenCircles3rdToday’s song is Krystle Warren’s My Third Love. The track first appeared on her 2008 EP, The Up Series. Warren later included a slightly reworked version as a bonus track on her first full-length album, Circles, featuring her regular backing band, the Faculty.

Warren’s music is a great blend of jazzy pop with smooth R&B. She has a rich voice reminiscent of a young Nina Simone and makes the most of it. This song is a little masterpiece, a perfect gem of smart, weary pop. Warren narrates the tentative beginnings and slow decline of a romantic relationship. The devil is in the details, and she works them in with subtle grace, spinning a compelling tale with rich emotional resonance. The band turn in a tight, smart performance that surges with almost giddy energy behind a vocal that moves from wistful to resigned to almost celebratory as the tale bursts to its conclusion.

Enjoy this wonderful song today.
