Song of the Day, February 5: I’ve Been Waiting by Matthew Sweet

Matthew-Sweet-Ive-Been-WaitingToday’s song is I’ve Been Waiting from Matthew Sweet’s power pop masterpiece Girlfriend. It’s a flash of brightness among the themes of loss and frustration, tempered nicely to fit the flow of the overall album. The singer celebrates the object of his affections, with Sweet’s clear voice making the most of even the mundane observations. He has waited for their relationship to flourish, and it seems his patience will soon be rewarded. The guitars are almost bubbly, anchored by a solid rhythm section, keeping the hopeful lyric tethered to the reality that bliss looms, but has not been realized.

Enjoy this great pop gem today.
