Song of the Day, February 2: Everybody by Ingrid Michaelson

Today’s song is Everybody by Ingrid Michaelson. The singer and songwriter started releasing her music on MySpace as a sideline while working as a director. IngridEverybodyShe released an album independently, and the music came to the attention of a producer for the TV show Grey’s Anatomy. Michaelson shared some songs with the show, signed a record deal that maintained much of her control of her material, and released two more albums. Her light, infectious folk-pop got a lot of attention and more use on television.

Everybody is the title track from her fourth album and ranks as one of her finest songs. It’s a sweet song about romantic pain anchored in hope. The message is simple — “Everybody wants to be loved” — but the smart delivery gives it real energy. Optimistic without being cloying and just wry enough without being too arch, it’s a good balance that hints at the big leap her writing and delivery would take over the next couple of albums.

Enjoy this delightful song today.
