Song of the Day, January 8: Straight and Narrow by Richard Thompson

RTChronElectricToday’s song is Straight and Narrow from Richard Thompson’s wonderful 2013 album Electric. The title of the album is apt, symbolizing not just the plugged-in instrumentation that dominates the disc but the renewed sense of energy RT brings to the proceedings. After a decade of solid but not quite inspired discs, Electric finds the master returning to form. The album is filled with gems and his playing and singing are energetic and enthusiastic, making the most of the great material.

Straight and Narrow is the standout, a driving song about misplaced love. It’s a warning that a woman who seems too good to be true probably is, surging along with a relentless energy that indicates the message probably comes too late. Perfectly constructed and delightfully delivered, it’s a new classic from a master talent.

Enjoy this wonderful song today.
