Song of the Day, December 23: I Got the Hots by the Soft Boys

SoftHotsToday’s song is I Got the Hots from the Soft Boys’ marvelous second album, Underwater Moonlight. Demonstrating the musical diversity of the band, it departs from the post-punk neo-psychedelia of much of their output. A bluesy shuffle, it’s a very off-kilter love song. Singer and lyricist Robyn Hitchcock displays some of his trademark lyrical quirks, presenting a series of pairings that he compares to the passion he feels. It’s a weird but compelling narrative and became a staple of Hitchcock’s live shows for decades after the band’s demise.

Said the dentures to the peach
Said the tide of filth to the bleach
Said the spike to the tomato
Said the curry to the corpse
I got the hots for you

Enjoy this strangely wonderful song today.
