Song of the Day, December 8: You Can’t Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want) by Joe Jackson

JacksonBodyWantToday’s song is You Can’t Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want) by Joe Jackson. After a powerful debut blast of smart, angry New Wave, Jackson demonstrated his diversity with each successive album, exploring power pop, reggae, and jump blues, and latin-tinged jazz all through the lens of his distinctive lyrical vision. After the success jazzy pop with Night and Day, he drew on another standard for the title of his sixth album (seventh, counting the Mike’s Murder soundtrack), Body and Soul. Like its predecessor, it has strong jazz influences, but features a more big band sound on many tracks. That’s certainly the case for the standout track and hit single [#15, 1984], You Can’t Get What You Want. With a rousing horn section driving things along, Jackson provides one of his smoothest vocals, still punching things with just the right emotion. It’s a wonderful exploration of self-determination with an upbeat musical backing that matches the lyrics nicely.

Enjoy this great pop hit today.
