Song of the Day, December 5: Twist of the Knife by Neko Case and Her Boyfriends

NekoTwistToday’s song is Twist the Knife from Neko Case’s stellar second album, Furnace Room Lullaby. Like its predecessor, the disc is credited to the singer “and Her Boyfriends,” acknowledging the great cast of characters who lend their talents to the proceedings. She co-wrote the track with pop rocker Ryan Adams, also early in his successful career, and local talent John Ramberg. Like most of the disc, it’s a look at darker emotions, a slow, sad song of resignation in a fatally flawed relationship. The band play a painfully slow country ballad backdrop as Case pour out each line with a heartfelt ache. Her vocals, always powerful, are just restrained enough to make the sounds fit the emotions.

Enjoy this sorrowful song today.
