Song of the Day, December 1: Long Run by Redgum

RedgumVirginLongRunToday’s song is Long Run by Redgum. This great Australian protest folk band assembled as part of a class project for the three founding members. Their collaboration was so well received that they began playing gigs and parties. Adding a fourth classmate, they settled on the name Redgum and released their powerful debut album If You Don’t Fight You Lose. The spent the next year studying, playing and touring, then released Virgin Ground in 1980. That album was successful enough to convince the band to pursue music full time.

The disc’s highlight is the determined, optimistic closer, Long Run. It’s a series of sketches of everyday life and political engagement, detailing the hardships we experience both large and small. It’s also a nice bit of Aussie pride and shame, celebrating the victories and acknowledging policy failures. As grim as the proceedings may be, the regularly chanted title line encourages hope for the future, as long as we stay engaged.

And the sun gives ground to a long cold night
Screw up your courage for another night
But you know in your heart
It’ll be all right
It’ll be all right in the long run
Enjoy this wonderful song of optimistic activism today.
