Song of the Day, July 15: So What by P!nk

PinkSoWhatToday’s song is So What, the lead single from P!nk’s powerful fifth album Funhouse. It’s one of her most striking songs, mixing her wit and grit, equal parts pose and plea. The album centers on her disintegrating relationship with husband Carey Hart. As the leadoff track, So What sets the tone nicely. With a swagger that proves vulnerable, she belts out rock star bluster, building a facade of strength and indifference. Lampooning typical bad-girl excesses, she harkens back to themes of responsible celebrity while trying to hide from her pain.

Mixing solid rock singing with an energetic club backdrop, it was a surefire hit that paid off, becoming P!nk’s first solo #1. It also shows her continuing growth as a singer and songwriter, working on multiple levels as it dissects various styles of coping.

So, so what?
I’m still a rock star
I got my rock moves
And I don’t need you

And guess what
I’m having more fun
And now that we’re done
I’m gonna show you tonight

Enjoy this great song today.
