Song of the Day, January 30: If You Were Here by Thompson Twins

TTwinsIfYWHToday’s song is If You Were Here by Thompson Twins. It appears on their third album Quick Step and Side Kick (originally released in the US as Side Kicks). The album was a big shift for the group as they shrank from seven members to three and began their move toward the more pop-oriented sound that made them famous. Perched between their dance-band days and their slick pop hits, it’s a wonderful set of complicated songs.

If You Were Here is a brilliant slice of dark synth-pop. Over a spare arrangement, Tom Bailey sings a hushed, haunting line of betrayal and longing. The music is quietly insistent, supporting the tone nicely.

If you were here
I could deceive you
And if you were here
You would believe

Enjoy this great song today.
