Song of the Day, January 21: Me and Sarah Jane by Genesis

GenesisAbacabToday’s song is Me and Sarah Jane by Genesis. Written by keyboard player Tony Banks, it appears on their powerful transitional album, abacab. Three albums into their most successful period, reduced to a trio, alternating with solo and side projects, the band members were at a creative peak. Presaging the Modern Rock movement, it shows off their prog rock roots, strong pop sensibilities, and musical diversity.

Me and Sarah Jane has a slippery, almost reggae beat and impressive keyboard work propelling a strange, dark tale. As with much of the band’s best work, the precise nature of the story is murky, with details showing through in glimpses. Is it a fantasy, the reflections of a madman, the story of a grim future world, a wanderer on the edges of our own? In the end, it doesn’t matter. Phil Collins is in fine voice and his drumming is flawless as Banks shows off his work as one of the finest keyboard players out there. Mike Rutherford holds it all together with solid guitar work. The grim yet not resigned song works as a cohesive whole.

Enjoy this great tale today.
