Song of the Day, December 24: When Ye Go Away by the Waterboys

WaterboysToday’s song is When Ye Go Away by the Waterboys. The band, centered around vocalist and guitarist Mike Scott, formed in 1981. They released three albums of anthemic rock before retooling with a move to Ireland toward the end of the decade. Adding a number of established acoustic folk musicians, Scott crafted the lovely Fisherman’s Blues, a soaring set of folky tracks with a clear thread of naturalism and honest emotion.

The highlight of the album is When Ye Go Away, a sad song of love ending. Set in a simple musical frame, it shows off Scott’s vocals in an unusually fragile light.

You ain’t calling me to join you
and I’m spoken for anyway
But I will cry when ye go away
I will cry when ye go away

Enjoy this beautiful song today.
