Song of the Day, October 25: Heart Skipped A Beat by the xx

xxHeartToday’s song is Heart Skipped A Beat by the xx. This British quartet came out of nowhere in 2009 with their stunning, fully-realized debut album, xx. Mixing indie pop, post-punk, electronic folk, and the perfect amount of sonic space into their own distinctive sound, they stunned critics and listeners with the sophistication of their vision. The fact that they were all barely in their 20s made the accomplishment all the more surprising. Vocalists Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim sometimes take a song on their own, but the most potent tracks have them singing together. Their voices blend and separate flawlessly, mixing wonderful harmonies with well-chosen alternating lines. Heart Skipped A Beat is one of the standouts, a song about missed chances and romantic regrets. The quiet, aching vocals and spare, fragile music work together nicely, conveying the desperation and resignation of the singers.

Please don’t say we’re done When I’m not finished I could give you so much Make you feel, like never before Welcome, they said welcome to the floor

Enjoy this wonderful song today.
