Song of the Day, October 18: Spirit of Love by John Bottomley

Bottomley_John_SpiritToday’s song is Spirit of Love by John Bottomley, from his wonderful 1995 album Blackberry. The album is an exploration of humanity’s connections to one another and to the world that sustains us. Bottomley takes a careful look at life, love, and the spirit that unites all living things, building wonderful stories and observations that he frames with his quiet but powerful folk structures.

Spirit of Love stands at the center of the disc and serves as something of an anthem for the collection as a whole. Sung in short, quick lines — snippets of thought and observation — it builds a complex picture from the incomplete fragments. Bottomley is in fine voice and the musical setting is appropriately stirring and reassuring at once.

Planting seeds
Yes I believe
The earth is sweet
The planets wink
It’s shimmering
Colouring dreams
Heed the message
In the wind
Spirit of Love
It’s in the plan
For every woman child and man

Enjoy this inspiring song today.
