Peter Schilling - Major Tom (45)This week sees an unusual German single debut on the Hot 100. Peter Schilling is a synthpop artist with a taste for science fiction. He borrowed David Bowie’s protagonist, Major Tom from Space Oddity, and crafted a haunting song. It follows Bowie’s basic story, but captures a different sense of loneliness and technological isolation. Originally recorded in German, he made an English version which debuted as Major Tom (Coming Home) at #89 this week. It eased up the charts, peaking at #14 for three weeks in December. An international smash, it propelled the English-language version of its parent album, Error In the System up many charts as well. Schilling has continued to chart in Germany, but has never matched the success of Major Tom elsewhere, managing only one other Hot 100 hit.
