Song of the Day, July 4: Certain Slant of Light by Vigilantes of Love

VoLSlantToday’s song is Certain Slant of Light by Vigilantes of Love. Centered around singer, guitarist, and writer Bill Mallonee, this group from Athens, GA recorded a number of great roots-rock albums in the 90s. This lovely song appears on Blister Soul, their strongest set.

It’s a pensive reflection on the pressures of life and the need to find ways to recharge. The singer finds hope — however flawed — in the eyes of a lover. Filled with Mallonee’s usual literate imagery, the song is powerful, dark, and ultimately hopeful.

There’s a certain slant of light
And the hope that’s in your eyes
And I hardly realize
As I slip beneath those waves

Enjoy this quiet song today.
