goanna-solid-rock-atcoThis week sees a short-lived Australian band debut with their only U.S. hit. Formed around singer and guitarist Shane Howard, Goanna had a significantly variable membership but were very successful in Australia. Their debut album Spirit of Place hit #1 and its lead single went to #2. Solid Rock is a protest song, decrying the treatment of the aboriginal people of Australia. Howard was initially unsure that it would make a good single, but decided that the message was too important not to release. It entered the Hot 100 at #87 this week; in a seven week run, it peaked at #71. (It’s also the only Hot 100 hit produced by Australian folk star and former Fairport Convention member Trevor Lucas.)

The band won many music awards and accolades at home. Continuing their revolving door of members, the band released one more album before falling apart in 1986. Howard made a brief attempt at recreating the band in 1998. He continues to record and perform as a solo act.
