After-The-Fire-Der-KommissarThis week sees another near One Hit Wonder debut on the Top 40 — this time after they had already disbanded. After the Fire formed in the UK in 1974 around keyboard player Peter Banks. They started with a prog-rock sound similar to 70s Yes or Genesis; this evolved into a more New Wave sound by the end of the decade when they released their first album. After four albums, lack of success and internal tension caused the band to call it quits in 1982.

Ironically, their English-language cover of Austrian singer Falco’s Der Kommissar caught on in the US, in part due to the noirish video. ATF’s Der Kommissar jumped from #55 to #31 this week, the highest debut in the Top 40. Eight weeks later it spent two weeks at #5. This success wasn’t enough to reunite the band however. A hastily compiled US album with highlights from the four British releases also included a second single, Dancing In the Shadows, which stalled at #85.
