Song of the Day, January 28: I Need Love by Sam Phillips

PhillipsINeedLoveToday’s song is I Need Love by Sam Phillips. After a brief, frustrating stint in Contemporary Christian music, she moved to a career in alt-pop with the help of then husband and producer T Bone Burnett. Her third secular album, Martinis and Bikinis, is a perfect capsule of her talents, showing of her lyrical strengths, diverse influences, and charming voice.

In many ways, this song is a career mission statement for Phillips. She explores all kinds of love, including the spiritual yearning that went unfulfilled in her early career. The result is a wonderful example of the personal made universal, resonating around a simple human theme.

I need love
Not some sentimental prison
I need god
Not the political church
I need fire
To melt the frozen sea inside me
I need love

Today is Sam Phillips’ 51st birthday. Enjoy this wonderful song and wish her many happy returns.
