Song of the Day, January 9: Northeast Kingdom by Cheri Knight

KnightNEKingdomToday’s song is Northeast Kingdom by Cheri Knight, the title track from her impressive second album. Much of the album focuses on rural life based on Knight’s other work as a New England farmer. This song is a perfect example, eerily capturing the private, nearly reclusive nature of such rural communities. Woven through that is the sense of connection, often manifested in obsession and gossip.

In these houses of stark white
We’d have you think that nothing ever happens

And yet the song hints of all that goes on where people really live, regardless of what they show to their neighbors. It’s a brilliantly crafted song, aching, honest, and creepy all at once. Enjoy this powerful tune today.
