Song of the Day, December 10: Respect by Aretha Franklin (Happy birthday to my husband)

Today is my husband Michael’s birthday. As a special present, today’s song is dedicated to him. It’s one of his favorites and a perfect song to celebrate this wonderful man: RESPECT by Aretha Franklin. I had always enjoyed her music, but it wasn’t until Michael shared his passion with me that I really understood why she’s the Queen of Soul.

Her de facto anthem, Respect was actually written by another R&B legend, Otis Redding (of Dock of the Bay fame). His version was a plea from a desperate man. Aretha reinvented it — adding the powerful R-E-S-P-E-C-T and the “sock it to me” chants — as the declaration of a powerful woman. A harbinger of the burgeoning feminist movement, it demands respect in no uncertain terms.

Michael dedicates his life to making sure everyone gets the respect they deserve, as demonstrated by his powerful blog. Here’s a bit of that respect back to you, wonderful man.

Everyone wish him a happy birthday with this great classic by the amazing Aretha.
