Album Business As Usual Men At Work


This week sees the biggest album of 1982 take its place atop the charts. Australian pub rock band Men At Work took America by storm in the fall of the year. Their debut single, Who Can It Be Now? entered the Hot 100 in July and eased up to #1 in its 17th week. The follow-up, Down Under, was just starting to get airplay as Business As Usual topped the album chart this week. It would stay at #1 for an impressive 15 weeks, eventually dethroned by Thriller. Down Under surged up the charts, hitting #1 in mid-January 1983 and sticking around for four weeks. Another track from the album, Be Good Johnny, received significant airplay and reached #3 on the Rock charts despite never being released as a single. (Down Under topped that chart as well, logging five weeks at the top.)

The band’s second album, Cargo, made a decent showing but didn’t live up to its predecessor. It stuck at #3 for five weeks behind Thriller and a pack of #2s. It lasted 49 weeks on the chart, a strong run but pale next to Business As Usual‘s 90 weeks. Cargo left the album chart only two weeks after the debut album’s impressive presence ended. Cargo included three singles. Overkill leapt onto the chart, debuting at #28; it stalled out at #3 two months later. It’s a Mistake, an anti-war song with an influential video, made it to #6. When it left the Top 40 on October 1, 1983, Men At Work had set a record for most consecutive weeks in the Top 40, 60 weeks with four songs. Even Thriller couldn’t touch that despite its chart omnipresence. Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive entered the Top 40 the following week and peaked at #28. It was the band’s last Top 40 hit. After one more album and single, they broke up.
