Song of the Day, September 24: I’m Free Now by Morphine

Today’s song is I’m Free Now by Morphine, from their brilliant second album Cure For Pain. It’s a perfect Morphine song, capturing all the aspects of their power as a trio in one package. The music has a loose, jazzy feel with a dark undercurrent. The lyrics are also fairly free form, with Mark Sandman delivering rhythmic sentence fragments more than traditional verses. They words are also bitterly ironic as he tries to celebrate his freedom from a relationship he did not want to end.

I got guilt I got fear I got regret I’m just a panic stricken waste I’m such a jerk I was honest I swear the last thing I want to do Honest I swear the last thing I want to do Is ever cause you pain I’m free now Free to look out the window Free to live my story Free to sing along

Sandman died while performing on July 3, 1999. Today would have been his 60th birthday. Celebrate a talented life cut short and enjoy this wonderful song today.
