This week sees another charming but short-lived band peak on the Hot 100. The strangely named Haircut 100 combined youthful good looks, great pop hooks, and a quirky innocence into a Top 10 album and singles in the U.K. In the U.S., they were somewhat less successful, charting with Love Plus One which peaked at #37 this week. It had ambled up the charts, taking 13 weeks to crest and lasting 17 weeks all told. It’s a fun song, with a charming lyric and a bubbly beat. It also took advantage of the emerging music video boom, showcasing the band’s clean-cut good looks (and featuring adorable leader Nick Heyward on a rope in nothing but a loincloth).

After four Top 10 U.K. singles, Heyward took a break citing exhaustion. The band tried to regroup in 1984 but had lost its momentum and dissolved. Heyward mounted a reasonably successful career with over a dozen hits in Britain over the years.
